NOTES
ON THE USE OF 'FUN' CAMERA
The
success of the Navigation competition this year depends on the use of a 'fun'
/disposable camera which will be handed out at the briefing.
The idea is that you will have to plot a point on the map as a 'target'
and then take a photo when you think you have reached it based on time and a
hint or description of what the target is.
Here
are some of the problems you might have and some hints:
No
picture?!. Because you can not hear or feel the shutter and
because you have to wind on manually this is likely to be the biggest problem.
The best method is to wind on just before taking the picture. Remember to check that
the camera is wound on before taking a picture
Accidental
picture. Do
not worry if you take an accidental picture - you will have at least 6 spare
pictures. Please try to record
the actual picture number for each on the answer sheet (as displayed on the
camera in reverse order down from 24). But
do not deliberately take 2 pictures of the same target or you risk being scored
on the wrong target and you may run out of film. Finish the film on arrival with
'team photos' alongside your aircraft with the registration visible.
Camera
shake. Hold steady and do not let the camera or your hands
touch the screen
Wrong
camera angle. The photo does not need to be taken overhead so there
is no need for 80 degree banked turns!
On
the other hand a distant view to the horizon is no good either - the photo needs
to clearly identify the 'target'. Choose
a suitable window position and fly almost straight and level on the track
heading and take the picture looking down at an angle of about 45 degrees - as
in the examples below. Try to put
the 'target' in the centre of the frame about 0.5 mile ahead.
Wrong height and direction There is no advantage in getting closer to the target so no low flying please!. Also, if you see a target late do not turn back or go veering off the route a take photo from a strange angle. Better to miss one photo and stay on track and on time.

| GOOD - clear target, good height and angle | BAD - too distant, no obvious target, not level |
