Dear Rallyists,
Thank
you for entering the 36th Guernsey International Air Rally and we
very much look forward to giving you a warm welcome whether it is your first
time or you have been a regular participant over the years. The key requirement
is that of flight safety and while the Guernsey Aero Club has vetted the
procedures in this leaflet in an attempt to ensure their safety and legality,
the Pilot-in-Command is at all times responsible for flying in accordance with
normal safe operating practice, and doing so within the privileges of his/her
Licence.
This leaflet
contains Guernsey arrival information and details on the flying competitions,
together with the programme of events. The highlight is the presentation dinner
and “Flying Circus” theme Banquet with hot food on the Saturday night held in
the Aero Club Hangar with music provided by “City Limits". This is an informal affair with optional
fancy dress for the occasion, options could be as a barnstormer, a circus
performer or even a Monty Pythons Flying
Circus character. There will be a
seating plan, so please inform the Aero Club Manager, Jean, who you would wish
to sit with on your arrival and we will try our best to oblige.
Please contact us
if you need more information or have special requirements. Best numbers are the
club numbers above or my mobile number +44(0)7781 105315.
Please note that
the office will be manned from 0600Z on Friday, 7th September for
changes and if you wish to check the weather on an informal basis. We would ask you to advise us as early as
possible if your programmed arrival is different so we can try to cancel or
re-let your hotel room. In certain
circumstances we may be obliged to pass on cancellation charges levied on us by
the hotels.
We wish you pleasant flying,
good luck in the competitions, and hope you thoroughly enjoy your participation
in the 2007 Guernsey International Air Rally.
Colin Ferbrache, Air Rally Director
[Return to Index] NIGHT STOP IN
FRANCE (Thursday 6th Sept.)
This year our navigation competition is starting
from Cherbourg (Maupertus) -LFRC
Cherbourg has a
tower frequency of 119.62 and prior to calling the Tower you should be in
contact with Deauville Approach on 119.82. Note that Deauville has another
approach frequency of 120.35 but this is for traffic to the East of Cherbourg
in the Deauville area. Request to change to Cherbourg Tower about ten miles
from the field or when you have it in sight.
Those routing down the coast
from the Cherbourg direction must
avoid at all costs the Cap De La Hague and Flammanville prohibited areas plus
area P81 over Cherbourg City.
Note there are
new VFR reporting points with the obscure names EC, SU and SC – see chart
available online linked from the bottom of the Rally homepage (see page 1)
Note also that the airfield closes at 18:30 UTC. We will be giving a list of all rally aircraft inbound and outbound to customs. It is important that you notify us of any changes
of aircraft registration or the number of passengers. Any non EU passengers should be prepared to
submit full details in advance.
Officials of the Guernsey Aero Club will greet you at Cherbourg Airport and assist with parking. The allocated parking area is to the East of the main apron. If you need fuel, we recommend you get this on arrival. If you can, refuel in Guernsey but make sure you have allowed enough fuel for the Nav-Ex and flight to Guernsey which is some 150nm in distance.
There will be
refreshments available on arrival and departure at the bar/restaurant in the
airport terminal together with a fine selection of wines.
If
you are delayed in arriving at Cherbourg, or are unable to arrive on the
Thursday for whatever reason, please telephone Barry or Mark (Phone numbers on
Page 9) at Cherbourg, or Jean, Aero Club Manager in Guernsey, to advise of your
intentions.
French Transport - We will provide transport
between the airport and your hotel which will be either at the French Port of
St Vaast La Hougue or the nearby town of Quettehou (just 2.5
kilometers inland). St Vaast is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. Both
towns are compact but with plenty of bars, shops and restaurants. A coach will
take you back to the airfield on the Friday morning departing at about 09.30
local.
French Accommodation – Rooms have been reserved at
the Hotel de France, St Vaast, and La Demeure du
Perron,
Quettehou. The package includes breakfast but not the
Thursday evening meal. We would, however, thoroughly recommend the excellent
Restaurant des Fuchsias at the Hotel de France, which is the venue most
Rallyists will be staying at. If you are looking for a less expensive menu, or
if the Fuchsias is full, there are, however, several other good restaurants in
both Quettehou and St Vaast, if you prefer, or, if the Fuchsias is full. (We
have reserved tables but cannot guarantee a place for latecomers.)
If you have time
on Thursday you could hire a car or rent a taxi from Cherbourg airport if you
should wish to visit the nearby Utah Beach D-Day Landing
site with its museum or another good invasion museum at St Mere L`Eglise. Both
are roughly 40 Kilometers away. Please settle your hotel bill for the
evening meal and any extras individually on departure. The room charge and
breakfast is included in your package and will be paid for by the Guernsey Aero
Club. Unfortunately, due to hotel
restrictions, we cannot offer any refunds if you are unable to make it to Cherbourg
by Thursday evening.
Landing and Parking Fees and local transportation costs have been included in the advance payments of £45 per person or £65 for single room hire.

COMPETITION IN FRANCE
This takes
place on Friday 7th September based in CHERBOURG with a touch and go
at LESSAY.
For those
arriving on the Friday morning for the navigation competition we would ask all
participants to arrive as early as possible and not later than 10.00 UTC (12:00
local French time). This is especially important due to conflicts with
departures and the single taxiway.
On arrival please be sure to check in with
Guernsey Aero Club members, who will be asking for your declared airspeed for
the competition and asking you to complete a flight plan to Guernsey. There will be a briefing for Friday arrivals
upstairs in the Cherbourg terminal building at 10.30UTC (12.30 French local).
Note you should plan about 150 miles or 2 hours for
the competition including transit to Guernsey. (NOTE:
you should declare as slow a speed as comfortable e.g. 70 knots C150. 80 knots
C172 to have a better chance of seeing photos and keeping to your time
schedule. Any twins wanting to fly
faster than 120 knots will be asked to fly higher this year).
Navigation Competition Charges – To cover the
costs of landing, parking and touch and go fees in France, plus the provision
of maps and GPS data loggers, there will be a charge of £25 per aircraft for
all entrants in the competition. . This will be either collected in advance or
paid for on arrival in Guernsey. For
those persons arriving on the Friday morning coffee and refreshments will be
available from the bar/restaurant in the airport terminal.
Your task will be to plot a route
on a 1:250,000 chart provided.
Along the route there will
be various points at which you will be asked to take a photograph based on your
plotting and a small clue of what you might be looking for. Some might be large features like dams and
chateaux but others might be small like road junctions. This year we are asking you to bring your
own digital camera with a standard removable memory card such as e.g..: (Compact
Flash, Memory Stick, SD, and xD).
You will be scored on
correctly identifying the 'target' and on your estimated distance from track
line when the photo was taken. As in
previous years, you will also have a time schedule overhead all the turning points
(which helps to ensure separation from other aircraft) and for the first time
this year the scoring will be based times derived from GPS loggers which have
kindly been loaned by the Royal Aero Club Air Racing organization.
Please
be sure to hand in the GPS logger and your camera memory card on arrival in Guernsey. The card will be
offloaded while you wait and a copy of your GPS track log will be handed out
with the results at the hangar ball on Saturday night.
One hour 15 minutes before
your take-off time you will be given your plotting information, a 1:250,000
map, a time schedule and the camera. (Please note that the map is not
aeronautical - you will still need a NW
France 1:500,000 to check airspace and heights.)
As in previous years there
will be an Open and a Sportsman class.
The Open class will include
previous winners and anyone using GPS as a primary aid, which must be declared
at the briefing. At Lessay you will
make a touch and go assessed landing as described below and then continue
un-timed along the coast to Guernsey.
There are more details about the competition on
the website or you can email any questions to Mark Dravers via the website
formet
[Return to Index] TOUCH
& GO SPOT LANDING AT LESSAY
Lessay has a frequency
LESSAY INFO 128.925 but no ATC so the following instructions are particularly
important.
You should make your position reports in
FRENCH. However for the greater safety of the other English speaking aircraft,
it is suggested that you also speak clearly in English. The frequencies will be
monitored from the ground but we are unable to, and will not, give any
instructions. All actions are at the discretion of the pilot and good
airmanship is especially required this year to achieve a safe Rally.
Overhead Lessay 2000ft = ‘au verticale Lessay a deux mille pied’
Downwind
left for 25 (or 07) = ‘Vent arriere
gauche vingt cinq’ (or zero sept)
Base-leg = ‘Etape de
base’
Finals = ‘Finale’
Lessay is a very nice typical French airfield with a long wide grass runway with a hard but slightly rough surface. However, we know not all types are suitable to land on grass and, with this in mind we have made the competition more interesting this year by asking you to make a glide approach/PFL. Anyone not wanting to land will make a low approach and go-around and will be scored on the position they are deemed they would have landed in had they continued (in the opinion of the judges!).
Approaching LESSAY climb to join at 2000ft, listen out and make standard calls on LESSAY INFO 128.925. KEEP A GOOD LOOKOUT FOR OTHER AIRCRAFT and try to establish a suitable spacing from any aircraft in front. If an orbit is required, do this on the dead side. When downwind at 1000’ abeam the threshold, call and say whether your approach is for touch and go or low approach and go-around. There will be markers and a flour line, and two judges wearing fluorescent jackets at the touch down line.
[Return to Index] GUERNSEY
ARRIVAL (all aircraft)
Unfortunately, due restrictions by the airport
authorities, we are unable to hold a landing competition this year. Instead we
intend to take a digital photograph of every aircraft landing. We will be
awarding the Arrival Prize Trophy to the aircraft who shows the best airmanship
based on the approach, R/T, and the quality of landing. The aim being aim to execute a smooth touch
down beyond the imaginary line drawn between the 1000 foot markers as shown on
the diagram below.

[Return
to Index] INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION
FOR RALLY PILOTS AT GUERNSEY
ARRIVALS
1)
Aircraft
arriving on Friday, 7th September should flight plan in the normal way,
entering “GAC RALLY No ....” in Field 18 of the Flight Plan.
2)
Any aircraft
arriving before Friday, 7th September, or on Saturday, 9th September should
follow normal flight planning requirements, but enter “GAC RALLY No ....” in
Field 18 of their Flight Plan. Published procedures for entering the Channel
Islands Control Zone will apply.
3)
VFR (CLASS ‘D’) lanes have been promulgated for
Friday, 7th. VFR flight will be
possible in these lanes in VMC. Rally
aircraft should arrange their flights to join the Channel Island CTR by one of
these Lanes. In the event of VMC not existing,
pilots should indicate if they are able to accept an IFR or request a SVFR
clearance, on first contact with Guernsey. (See AIP Supplement)
4)
The VRP for leaving the French coast will
be Point Rozel. Do not track north of this VRP. You must avoid at all costs,
the well marked Cap Flamanville restricted area! Remember if you stray into
the restricted area, the French have seriously heavy penalties and even
confiscation of aircraft
5)
IMPORTANT NOTE! - DO NOT call Jersey
Zone!
The
first radio call for joining the LANES should be made to “Guernsey Rally” on
124.50 MHz, giving callsign plus rally number. Aircraft MUST NOT enter the Lanes
until the Guernsey Rally controller has issued a clearance.
5) Guernsey Airport has noise abatement procedures as listed in the UK
AIP.
Aircraft should join the final approach at not less
than, and maintain 836ft AMSL (500ft AAL) until intercepting the glide path
PAP1 indications.
6) After arrival at Guernsey, aircraft will be directed to a parking position on the West Grass Parking area, and must follow ground marshalling instructions for parking. Pilots are requested to arrange refueling on arrival wherever possible. This area will be reserved for visiting aircraft. Pilots and/or crew should wear High Visibility Tabards when going to and from their aircraft.
7) The arrival landing fee and parking fee is free for Rally participants only, for the Rally period. However, additional landing fees will be levied for any local or international flights you may wish to undertake during the weekend. Also, additional costs may be levied for parking before and after 7-9th September. All extra charges must be paid at the Flight Clearance Office below the tower before leaving Guernsey for home.
8) Non-Transponder equipped aircraft will be accepted providing that they fly to and from Guernsey using the Class D Lanes.
9) IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT FOR all
aircraft operating under ‘a Permit to fly, or Microlites’ to obtain prior written permission of the Manager Air
Traffic Control to fly into Guernsey Airport.
Applications should be accompanied by copies of the
aircrafts Insurance, Certificate of Validity and Permit to Fly documents issued
by the State of Registry. Please advise us as soon as possible if this applies
to your aircraft.
Apply to Ray Plant, Manager Air Traffic Control, Guernsey
Airport, Forest, Guernsey GY8 0DS………….. (Fax to 01481 239595 or Email:
ray.plant@gov.gg).
It should be noted that the Channel
Islands Control Zone IS NOT UK Airspace and UK NPPL’s are not recognized.
DEPARTURES
10) For those aircraft departing on Sunday, 9th
September, the VFR Lanes are again promulgated; VFR flight will be possible in these
lanes in VMC. Rally aircraft should
arrange their flights to depart via one of the Lanes. (See AIP Supplement)
11) Flight Plans may be filed at anytime during the weekend. We would ask as many of you as possible to file on Friday and Saturday. Please do not all file on Sunday morning as this could cause you delays. To ease the departure flow we would ask you to obtain departure slots at the Aero Club (preferably at your arrival check in) for take off's between 08:00Z and 14:00Z on the Sunday. These will be allocated at 4 minute intervals.
12) Request for 'start up' should be made on Guernsey Ground on frequency 121.8 MHz.
13) Departure noise abatement procedures are published in the UK AIP, basically these are:
a) Take off procedures – Runway 09 and 27 – climb straight ahead to at least 1500ft AAL or 3 DME whichever is the earliest before turning on course.
b) Special VFR/VFR Flights - Take off - Aircraft proceeding on a clearance of at or below 1000ft QNH, continue straight ahead until clear of the coastline before turning on course. Aircraft climbing to the higher altitudes/flight levels proceed as in paragraph (a).

[Return to Index] GENERAL NOTES!
1. The UK ATS Airspace Classification applies to the Channel Islands. UK VFR will apply to the LANES. You should be aware of the Minima that applies to you with your licenses for Class ‘D’ Airspace, or if arriving direct you should be aware that the Channel Islands Zone is Class ‘A’ Airspace. ATC may have to impose Special VFR or IFR. Pilots are advised to obtain en route weather and be prepared for a suitable diversion. If Special VFR clearances have to be given, ATC must use IFR separation standards. If traffic cannot be seen on radar, this may mean some delays before subsequent clearances can be issued.
2. On completion of parking your aircraft on the grass and
re-fuelling, please proceed to the roadway adjacent to the Control Tower
building where transport will take you and your bags to the Aero Club for the
arrival formalities. It is a requirement that all aircraft
complete the enclosed Aircraft Declaration Form (it is suggested that the form be completed as fully as
possible before arrival to speed the formalities in Guernsey). To
assist ATC, we would emphasize again the value of obtaining departure slots at
this stage for those departing between 08:00Z and 14:00Z on Sunday, 10th
September. These will be allocated at 4
minute intervals and if necessary order specific Met information for
Sunday.
At the Guernsey Aero Club
the main reception process takes place. We will confirm your accommodation and
ask you to pay the basic room charges plus complete the necessary documentation
for the pre-booked hire cars. Having completed the arrival formalities a gratis
snack lunch will be served in the Club for those arriving before 16:00.
3. The landing of animals in Guernsey is STRICTLY PROHIBITED with
aircraft arriving
directly or indirectly
from any place outside the UK, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey or
Alderney.
4. There are only a limited number of tie-downs at Guernsey airport for the picketing of aircraft. You are advised to bring your own ropes and pickets in case of strong winds.
5. In the event of non-arrival due to bad weather or aircraft unserviceable, we would advise participants to take out insurance for the loss of hotel deposits. We hope we can avoid cancellation charges if you let us know early of not making it to Guernsey. In the event of non-arrival we will return your fee less £10.00 per person or net of any hotel cancellation charges, if the Aero Club is invoiced.
6. Saturday
options could include:
