Dear
Rallyists,
Thank
you for entering our special 40th Guernsey International Air Rally
and we very much look forward to giving you a warm welcome whether it is your first
time or you have been a regular participant over the years. The key requirement
is that of flight safety and, while the Guernsey Aero Club has vetted the
procedures in this leaflet in an attempt to ensure their safety and legality,
the Pilot-in-Command is at all times responsible for flying in accordance with
normal safe operating practice, and doing so within the privileges of his/her
License.
This
leaflet contains Guernsey arrival information and details on the flying
competitions, together with the programme of events. There is a mixture of good advice and some formal requirements to
be aware of but there is nothing to worry about, even if it is your first time
to Guernsey, if you have any worries please do not hesitate to phone or email
us with any questions or queries.
The
highlight of the weekend is the informal presentation evening in the form of a
“Hangar Hog Roast Hoe Down” on the Saturday night held in the Aero Club Hangar
with music provided by the Band “the Barley Dogs”.
For those who wish to dress up there is an optional fancy dress with a ”Barn
Dance” theme, so dig out your cowboy hat, farmyard outfits etc.
Please
contact us if you need more information or have special requirements, including
a vegetarian option at the Hangar Hoe Down. Best numbers are: Tel: +44(0)1481
265267; Fax: +44(0)1481 263830, or email: rally@guernseyaeroclub.com. An alternative is my mobile number +44(0)7781 105315.
Please
note that the office will be manned from 0700Z on Friday, 24th June,
2011 for changes and if you wish to check the weather on an informal basis. We
would ask you to advise us as early as possible if your programmed arrival is
different so we can try to cancel or re-let your hotel room. In certain circumstances we may be obliged
to pass on cancellation charges levied on us by the hotels.
We wish you pleasant flying, good luck in the competitions, and hope
that you thoroughly enjoy your participation in the 2011 this, the 40th
Guernsey International Air Rally.

NAVIGATIONAL COMPETITION INSTRUCTIONS
This is optional part of
the rally and takes place on Saturday morning
There
will be a briefing during the Pimms reception about 19:30 on Friday in
the briefing room in the Air Search hangar.
Anyone missing this or arriving on Saturday should contact Mark Dravers
for a personal briefing. On Saturday we
will be based upstairs in the ASG hangar (adjacent to the West Grass Parking
Area). Start times will be posted and
will give most people time to do other things such as the pre-flight
competition and ensure aircraft are fuelled for a flight of about 150 miles
including transits from/to Guernsey.
The route is quite short (only 70 miles over France to the SW of
Guernsey) and is easy so that it should be perfectly suitable for complete
novices (‘sportsmen’) while some of the photos are intended to test the more
experienced (‘open’ class) crews.
You
will need to bring: a protractor, 1:250,000 nautical mile ruler/scale and a
digital camera with a standard removable memory card such as e.g..: (Compact
Flash, Memory Stick, SD, and xD).
Your
task will be to plot a route on a 1:250,000 chart provided. Along the route there will be various points
at which you will be asked to take a photograph based on your plotting and a
small clue of what you might be looking for. Some might be large features like
dams and chateaux but others might be small like road junctions.
You
will be scored on correctly identifying the 'target' and on your estimated
distance from track line when the photo was taken. You will also be given a time schedule overhead all the turning
points (which helps to ensure separation from other aircraft) and the scoring
will be based times derived from GPS loggers.
Please be sure to hand in the GPS logger and your camera memory card on
arrival in Guernsey. The card will be offloaded while you wait and a copy of
your GPS track log in Google earth format will be handed out with the results
at the hangar ball on Saturday night.
One
hour 15 minutes before your take-off time (or novices can request more time),
you will be given your plotting information, a 1:250,000 map and a time
schedule. (Please note that the map is not aeronautical- you will still need
a NW France 1:500,000 to check airspace and heights.)
Allow
plenty of time to get to your airplane and to taxi out taking into account
possible air traffic delays due to scheduled traffic. The take off is not timed but your arrival over the start point
in France is timed. Please follow
instructions given at the briefing for safe separation on the transits and
remember the route is strictly VFR - you are responsible for maintaining safe
separation at all times, even in the zone.
There
are a few more details including some example tracks and photos on the website
or you can email any questions to Mark Dravers via the website form
‘FLY SAFELY’ and GOOD
LUCK!
FOR RALLY PILOTS AT
GUERNSEY
Please see instructions below about arrivals. On arrival please be sure to check in with Guernsey Aero Club
members, who will be confirming your accommodation arrangements and hire cars etc. plus your intentions with the Navigation
route on Saturday.

joining the lanes should be made to “Guernsey Rally” on 124.50 MHz, giving
callsign plus rally number.

5) Guernsey
Airport noise abatement procedures.
Guernsey Airport has noise abatement procedures as listed in the UK AIP.
Basically aircraft should aim to join the final approach at not less than, and
maintain 836ft AMSL (500ft AAL) until intercepting the glide path PAP1
indications.
6) After arrival at Guernsey, aircraft will be directed to a parking
position on the West Grass Parking Area,
Please follow
ground marshalling instructions for
parking. You will be met by a member of the Guernsey Aero Club and, after the
short walk towards the ‘Tower,’ you will driven the short distance to the Aero
Club by minibus. There are only a limited number of tie-downs at
Guernsey airport for the picketing of aircraft. You are advised to bring your

DEPARTURES
10) For those aircraft departing on
Sunday, 26th June, the VFR Lanes are again promulgated; VFR flight
will be possible in these lanes in VMC.
11) Flight
Plans may be filed at anytime during the weekend. Do not forget to include
estimates for FIR boundaries (e.g. EET/CICTR0010) under Item 18. We would ask as
many of you as possible to file on Friday and Saturday as leaving it to Sunday
morning could cause you delays. To ease the departure flow we would ask you
to obtain departure slots at the Aero Club (preferably at your arrival check
in) for take off's between 08:00Z and 14:00Z on the Sunday. These will be
allocated at 4 minute intervals.
12). After start contact Guernsey Tower frequency on 119.95
and expect to be given your ATC clearance before any taxi clearance. If ATC are
using the Ground Frequency you will
be informed at the Aero Club before going to your aircraft and or you will be
advised on the ATIS frequency, call Guernsey Ground after start on
frequency 121.80 MHz.
13) Departure noise abatement procedures are published
in the UK AIP, basically these are:
a)
Take off procedures – Runway 09 and 27 – climb straight ahead to at least
1500ft AAL or 3 DME whichever is the earliest before turning on course. If
leaving Guernsey to the south,
all departures, except those flying a SID, will climb straight
ahead to at least 850 feet QNH before turning on course. The turn on course is
subject to any ATC restriction.
b)
Special VFR/VFR Flights - Take off - Aircraft proceeding on a clearance of at
or below 1000ft QNH, continue straight ahead until clear of the coastline
before turning on course unless leaving Guernsey to the south when a turn onto
a southerly track can be started at 850ft QNH. Aircraft climbing to the higher
altitudes/flight levels proceed as in paragraph (a) above.
1) Booking in at the Club
a)
It would help if you can complete
the enclosed form for Guernsey customs in advance. Remember if you are traveling
back to a non-customs airport in UK you have to give 24hours notice by sending
a ‘GAR’ form to customs and county ‘special branch’ fax numbers.
b)

pre-booked hire cars.
